He insisted that anyone who wanted to meet him — even kings and emperors — first had to sit on the floor and eat langar with everyone, regardless of caste or status. He spoke up for the rights of women, opposed sati and the veil, and built the famous 84-step Baoli at Goindwal Sahib.
